Director of Surgical Services

Our client is currently seeking an outstanding appointee for the position of Director of Surgical Services. The successful applicant will join this health service located in south west Victoria, in a public appointment providing high quality, comprehensive patient care, with the option of private practice. This position offers the opportunity to lead and further develop services, assist in providing strategic and clinical co-ordination, and demonstrate ongoing excellence in clinical practice.
The health service is an integrated health care facility providing a comprehensive range of services including: General Surgery, ENT, O&G, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Urology, GI Endoscopy, General Medicine, Rehabilitation, Sub-acute care and Accident and Emergency.
Having recently undergone a variety of upgrades including opening a new multi-million dollar residential aged care facility, upgrading a dedicated sub-acute unit and an upgrade on all equipment, this hospital provides health care services to a catchment population of over 10,000 in Victoria
The region is central to some of the most picturesque areas Victoria has on offer and is home to some of Australia’s best fishing, swimming and surfing spots. It boasts amazing scenery with beautiful rainforests and waterfalls on your doorstep.
The successful applicant would be employed in a health appointment with an opportunity to engage in private practice.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
Leadership and Management
Undertake the full range of clinical surgical activities consistent with training and credentialing, demonstrating clinical leadership in service delivery in area of specialty
Accept responsibility and accountability for the day to day management of all surgical services across the service, consistent with best clinical practice, available resources, and budgetary requirements
Ensure compliance with all relevant Australian and College standards and requirements
Review the policies and procedures of surgical provision, updating as needed to reflect best practice and evidence based medicine
Develop an annual budget and business plan in consultation with the Nurse Unit Manager, Theatre Suite, and DMS
Advise on the strategic development of the service and associated services
Represent the Surgical services and health service at the appropriate meetings and forums
Continuum of Care
Coordinate the rostering of theatre sessions in conjunction with the DMS to ensure appropriate workforce resources for service delivery
Ensure that the department is adequately resourced to enable effective service delivery
Human Resources Management
Participate in the recruitment, selection and appointment processes, and facilitate the orientation and training, of staff
Act as a mentor and role model to staff
Safe Practice and Environment
Carry out work duties in a safe manner by adhering to the health service’s occupational health and safety policies, regulations and agreed safe work procedures, and report immediately any potential hazards and / or incident arising in the workplace
Plan, implement and evaluate the delivery of surgical services and appropriate quality and risk management initiatives, including recommendations where appropriate
Adhere to infection control policies and procedures as identified in the associated Infection Control Manual
Improving Performance
Ensure that the affairs of the service, its patients, clients and staff remain strictly confidential and are not divulged to any third party except where required for clinical reasons or by law. Such confidentiality shall extend to commercial and financial interests and activities
Participate in and coordinate quality improvement activities and projects, including development of audit tools, collection of data and statistics and presentation of final reports
Actively participate in the performance review process both in relation to own performance and direct reports
Participate in continuing professional development
Encourage and develop research activities
Information Management
Maintain appropriate manual and electronic systems and procedures for the effective management of diaries, policies and procedures, correspondence, documents and records, to ensure confidentiality, safety and security
Act as a surgical representative at meetings as specified
Ensure that information is communicated effectively and efficiently and in an appropriate and timely manner
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Medical Degree eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
FRACS or equivalent (MRCS/ FRCS with CCST, FACS, Board Certification in General Surgery or equivalent)
Substantial clinical and managerial experience at a senior clinical level in the health sector
Experience in teaching at undergraduate and graduate level
Experience in self management and organisation of work to achieve agreed outcomes
Comprehensive knowledge in delivery of surgical services and operating theatre requirements
Proficiency in structuring service delivery, including rostering and theatre staff allocations
Understanding of customer service for internal and external customers
Awareness of medico-legal issues, clinical risk management, clinical governance and relevant legislation
A generous salary package of approx $355,000 AUD per annum is available and includes:
Base Salary ($300,000)
