The points system
Skilled migration to Australia continues to be an essential requirement in meeting the skills shortage across the nation. Skilled migration accounts for 108,500 visa places in Australia, an increase from 97,500 in the previous year. Planned intakes over the next year show a marked increased in the number of place, showing the Australian government's continued commitment to this type of migration.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) continuously reviews the visa classes, points and pass marks to ensure Australia attracts people with skills that are required in the marketplace. The general skilled migration stream had a major restructure on 1 September 2007.
